  • Student Legal Aid
    The Student Government Association funds a local attorney to assist with student legal needs. Student legal aid is available for all current students attending the University of South Dakota. Legal aid services are provided by Kasen Lambeth, attorney at law. You can contact Kasen at kasen@lambethlawoffice.com or 605-228-7013.

    Legal Resources

    • Marsy's Card (effective July 1, 2018)
      Marsy's Law is an amendment to the South Dakota constitution that guarantees crime victims specific rights, including but not limited to: the right to be protected from the person accused and anyone acting on the accused's behalf; the right to be informed promptly of the release or escape of the accused from law enforcement custody; and the right to restitution for all loses suffered due to the crime. This link includes the full list of crime victims' rights, as well as other resources available.

    • Statewide Automated Notification System (SAVIN)
      Statewide Automated Victim Information Notification system, or SAVIN, is a free automated service that allows you to obtain information about a criminal offender, and to register for notification in the offender's status, such as if they are released.

    • DSS Crime Victims' Compensation Program
      You may be eligible for compensation from the South Dakota Victims' Compensation Fund if you need assistance for medical care, loss of income, or counseling due to the crime committed against you. There are several requirements for eligibility, which can be found at the above site.
